Certification boost as Boulby products shipped worldwide

A leading international certification body has confirmed that polyhalite multi-nutrient fertilisers produced at the ICL Boulby mine in East Cleveland are approved for use in organic farming.

The certification from the Control Union organisation confirms that both the Polysulphate Standard and Granular grades of polyhalite comply with both European and US regulations and can also be accepted in other parts of the world.

The Boulby mine is the world’s first and only producer of polyhalite, marketed as Polysulphate, which combines sulphur, potassium, magnesium and calcium, and this latest recognition further underlines its growing contribution worldwide in increasing yields and quality for a wide range of crops.

The certification comes as products from Boulby are being transported by rail to its Teesdock facility for destinations worldwide. Shipments in recent weeks have included loading the 33,000tonnes MV Discovery taking polysulphate granular to Brazil and granular and standard grades being transported to the USA on the 28,000tonnes MW Orient Accord.

Other shipments have included coaster vessels for the UK and Europe, whilst the latest includes loading a 36,000 tonnes vessel for China.

Says ICL Boulby general manager and vice president Andrew Fulton “Organic agriculture is a quickly growing market as consumers demand farmers, grocers and others involved in the food chain address the sustainability challenges of the global food supply. The certification from the Control Union, which is an internationally recognised organisation, is another major step forward in emphasising the increasingly important role of Boulby Polysulphate in meeting the world’s food needs.

“That is also underlined by the growing list of destinations that our now being served from our Teesdock terminal, keeping all sections of our team, working hard to keep up with the demand for our unique products.”
