Agriculture ministers meet in Sydney

Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, is in Sydney today to meet with primary industries ministers and representatives from Australia and New Zealand.

Minister Joyce said the third meeting of the Agriculture Ministers’ Forum (AGMIN) is a great opportunity for ministers to address key priorities for the agriculture sector including outcomes announced in the Budget.

“I am looking forward to updating my colleagues on the progress of the Agricultural Competitiveness and Northern Australia white papers, and the concessional loans schemes available to farm businesses in financial hardship,” Minister Joyce said.

“This meeting also provides a strategic forum to continue to work with my state and territory counterparts on progressing the Country of Origin Labelling framework and the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) for sheep and goats.”

State and territory Agriculture Ministers will be encouraged to provide updates on major water infrastructure projects and priorities for development in their jurisdictions.

Minister Joyce said other issues to be discussed included trade development and strategies to improve export opportunities for Australian agriculture.

“I will continue to work with states and territories to improve relationships and reduce ambiguity amongst trading partners, and to promote Australia as a reliable exporter of quality agricultural products,” Minister Joyce said.

The Bureau of Meteorology will also present findings to governments about the predicted seasonal impacts facing Australia in the future.

”We’re covering a lot of ground today. The key to a successful agricultural sector is governments working together and sharing ideas, and forums like AGMIN allow us to do just that,” Minister Joyce said.

A communiqué detailing the outcomes of AGMIN will be available on the Department of Agriculture website after the meeting.
