TFA welcomes Liz Truss to new role in DEFRA

The Tenant Farmers Association has written to Liz Truss MP, welcoming her to her new role as DEFRA Secretary Of State.

TFA Chief Executive George Dunn said “The TFA would first like to pay tribute to outgoing Secretary of State, Owen Paterson for all the work that he has done in DEFRA through some difficult times. He took many tough decisions and although we did not agree with all of them, you could not doubt that he was a passionate supporter of farming, the countryside and rural Britain”.

“As with all Ministers who move to a new Department, Ms Truss will have a steep learning curve. However in representing a deeply rural constituency with farming at its heart, she will have a head start on some of her predecessors. The TFA looks forward to meeting with her to brief her on the specifics of the tenanted sector of agriculture,” said Mr Dunn.

“In writing to her we acknowledged that she will be receiving much advice about what should be her top priorities. The TFA has also given her a few items to think about,” said Mr Dunn.

The TFA has listed the following issues as early priorities for the new Secretary of State:

▪ Working with the Treasury to alter the taxation environment within which land owners make decisions to encourage longer term farm business tenancies.

▪ An overhaul of the governance structures relating to drainage and flood risk management, expanding the use and scope of Internal Drainage Boards.

▪ Working with the Department for Energy and Climate Change to remove the Feed in Tariff (FiT) for crop fed anaerobic digestion systems to stop the inflationary impact on farm rents.

▪ Using the new Rural Development Programme for England to encourage greater numbers of breeding livestock in upland areas.

▪ Providing paper based alternatives for applications to the new CAP schemes to be implemented from January next year for those who lack the ability to use the new digital application platform.
