The Liberal Democrat MP on the Public Accounts Committee has endorsed the committee’s finding that the government “does not inspire confidence in [its]ability to cope with Brexit challenges”.
This is in response to a catalogue of late-payment to farmers, including after emergencies such as flooding.
John Pugh MP said:
“The government does not seem to care about small family farms going to the wall.
“The Conservative Brexit government takes farmers for granted.
“Ministers have refused to guarantee that over the long-term they will give British farmers the help they have traditionally received from Europe, but which is now threatened by a Conservative hard Brexit.
“Meanwhile, Theresa May is attempting to cobble together a replacement trade deal with Donald Trump which could inflict huge damage on British farmers thanks to cheap American imports which are not subject to the same health and safety standards.
“Our farmers would be much better off with a British government fighting their corner in Europe.”
The Liberal Democrats are fighting to give the people a say on the final Brexit deal.
