Flooding and water security key priorities for new EA chair, says CLA

The CLA has called on the newly appointed Chairman of the Environment Agency, Philip Dilley, to address its priorities regarding flooding and water security.

Mr Dilley, whose appointment was confirmed this week, will take up the position in September when Lord Chris Smith’s term in office ends.

CLA President Henry Robinson said: “We wish him well in his new appointment and look forward to furthering the excellent working relationship we had with his predecessor but, there are some issues that will need his urgent attention.

“The horrendous floods in Somerset earlier in the year, and the tidal surge that hit the east coast in December 2013, have highlighted the lack of investment in river and flood defences over recent years – and that’s something that clearly needs adressing.

“We recognise that dredging is only part of the answer. We believe there is a need for a new way of overseeing drainage and flood defences that gives greater influence and funding to landowners through Internal Drainage Boards. We hope, that under his guidance, the Environment Agency will help facilitate this.”
