Copa and Cogeca celebrated Europe Day in Brussels today, underlining the importance of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which has played a major role in the construction of Europe.
Speaking in Brussels, Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen “Today we can celebrate many years of peace and prosperity as well as the creation of the CAP which has given consumers quality food supplies at affordable prices at the same time as boosting growth and jobs in rural areas. This is at a cost of less than 1% of total EU public spending”.
He continued “Agriculture is the only sector which has a truly common EU policy and is one of the successes of Europe, making an important contribution to it. To ensure this continues, the EU needs a strong agricultural policy and a credible budget for it after 2020. European support for investment in rural areas and critical infrastructure improvements is vital to overcome the digital divide, as recognised in the Cork Declaration, as are national policies aimed at moving government jobs out of capital cities to help give new life to rural communities”.
