Alyn confirmed as only Scots voice on European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee

SNP Member of the European Parliament Alyn Smith has been confirmed as the only Scots representative on the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee.

The three term MEP, a member of the Committee since 2007, will continue his work on the Committee as a substitute member, whilst also taking on a membership of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Substitute members are entitled to participate in all meetings as regular members.

Alyn said:

“I promised that I would continue to work with and for Scotland’s farmers and growers and I’m pleased that Scotland will continue to be represented in the Agriculture Committee.

“I have worked, and I hope worked well, with Scotland’s farmers and organisations. We are blessed to have such a passionate and professional group of folk fighting Scottish farming’s corner. The National Sheep Association, the Scottish Beef Association, Farmers for Yes, the Scottish Crofting Federation, the Scottish Organic Producers Association, the New Entrants Forum, the Scottish Tenant Farmers Association, Nourish Scotland, Scotland Food and Drink, our world class scientists in the Moredun, SRUC, SCRI and others: we have worked well together and I hope we will continue to do so into the future.

“With the line by line detail of CAP reform now past us there is much less legislation in the Committee’s pipeline, and as a substitute member I will be able to maintain my levels of activity and engagement whilst being better able to pursue specific issues of importance to Scotland, rather than responding to line by line dossiers about tobacco and wine production.

“Scotland’s food and drink sector is a good news story, and while we might not be in a position to feed the world we are certainly going to provide some of the science and technology to do so. We have a unique proximity of hands-on science and a social geography well used to co-operation, at a time when resource scarcity and climate change is driving many of the events we see in the world.”
