Tax officials in Brittany hit back yesterday at farmers who set fire to their offices and dumped artichokes and cauliflowers in the streets during a protest against low vegetable prices and high taxes.

Patrick Vélain of the civil service union said officials were growing tired of being pelted with eggs and abused by furious taxpayers.

“We’re sick of being targeted by the famers of north Finistère,” Mr Vélain told France-Info radio. “It isn’t the first time the tax centre has been attacked. We’re always told the perpetrators will be punished and then nothing happens.”
