Mafia-like gangs are profiting from an unlikely union between rural Welsh sheep farmers who supply urban West African communities with ‘smokies’ – an outlawed delicacy prepared by blow-torching whole sheep carcases.

Decades after the Government’s banned smokies over fears that consumers would be poisoned by E.Coli and Salmonella in the meat, an underground trade continues, Munchies, VICE’s online food channel, has revealed in a new documentary.

Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC), a Welsh red meat promotion agency predicted in 2010 that the trade is worth up to £3 million per year.
