Congratulations, Meurig

It gives this publication great pleasure, and I am unanimous in this, as Mrs Slocombe used to say, to congratulate Meurig Raymond on becoming president of the National Farmers Union. It’s not just because he’s a nice fellow, or because he is the winner of Personality of the Year in the Farm Business 2013 Food and Farming Industry Awards, or because he’s a judge in the Cream Awards.

It’s because we’re firmly convinced that the farming industry in England and Wales could not wish for a better spokesperson at a time when there are a huge number of challenges for the sector and it needs the right voice to speak to government and to the electorate through the mass media.

I’d like also to offer our congratulations to retiring president Peter Kendall on his period in office. He’s led the farming industry through some particularly trying times and never failed to present a voice of reason and calm, while
being prepared to make agriculture’s point forcibly when needed.
