Paterson right to support woodland planting, says CLA

The CLA today (Friday, 10 January) welcomed Environment Secretary Owen Paterson’s commitment to keeping up the level of new woodland planting.

CLA President Henry Robinson said: “We are pleased Mr Paterson has decided to provide the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) with the money needed to maintain new woodland planting in England throughout the transition period of the Common Agricultural Policy reform process.

“The CLA has long argued that continuity of funding for new planting is essential to retain the confidence of the nursery trade and encourage it to make the investment needed to boost the quantity of home-grown stock available to landowners.”

Mr Robinson added: “It is good news Mr Paterson has ended the uncertainty over this issue, allowing landowners and tree nurseries to plan for the future.

“Less reliance upon imported trees is also vital to strengthen our defences against tree diseases from abroad.”
