NFU Scotland on SRUC link-up with Edinburgh University

Chief Executive of NFU Scotland, Scott Walker commented: “This proposed greater link up between SRUC and Edinburgh University should ensure that farming research and education in Scotland remains world leading.

“The provision of local education is hugely important to the farming and rural communities. We have excellent facilities in the likes of Elmwood, Oatridge, Barony and Edinburgh Campuses and their merger to form SRUC was about enhancing these facilities and so providing the necessary skills needed for the work place. It’s important that local further education provision is also enhanced through this proposal as its provision is hugely important for students as well as the rest of the industry.

“A unique asset of SRUC is its farm estate and this is something that is invaluable to the education provision in Scotland. It is something that needs to be protected and developed if we are to ensure that education and industry deliver together.

“We are sure that with what has been announced today there is potential to deliver in a way that has benefits for all the people of Scotland. But attention to detail is crucial when the previous mergers are still in their earliest stages with new more centralised governance still to be seen to deliver.”
