New chairman of Copa and Cogeca Animal Health and Welfare Working Party Gywn Jones to focus on EU animal health law and welfare initiatives

Top priorities for newly elected Chairman of Copa and Cogeca Animal Health and Welfare Working Party Gywn Jones are the implementation of the new EU animal health law due to be finalised in April and welfare initatives.

Talking after the elections in Brussels today, Gywn Jones said “In my two year mandate, I will work hard to put forward our views and ensure that the new EU animal health law due to be finalized in April is implemented well and make sure that the concerns of farmers and cooperatives are taken into account. The challenge is to find the right balance between respecting the needs of farmers so that they can continue to help solve hunger and malnutrition at the same time as responding to what politicians want. I will also also work on the different animal welfare initatives. We already have some of the highest health and welfare standards in the world and consumers should be better informed on this”.

“Another priority for me is to tackle antibiotic resistance. Livestock farmers respect good animal husbandry principles and its our view that antibiotics must be used responsibly.I am also Chairman of the European Platform for the Responsible Use of Medicines in Animals (EPRUMA) ‘and I believe that veterinary medicines, including antibiotics, need to be used responsibly to maintain their efficacy. All animal health stakeholders are committed to responsible use’. Antibiotics should be used “as little as possible, and as much as necessary’ And I urge EU Farm Ministers to take a pragmatic approach during their talks on EU proposals relating to medicated feed and veterinary medicines on Monday.

Mr Jones is a farmer in Sussex and member of the National Farmers Union of England and Wales as well as being Chairman of the AHDB Dairy. He will be supported by two Vice-Chairman Adam Drosio from Poland and Miguel Angel Higuera from Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias from Spain.
